After scrolling through the few anime series found on Netflix, I came across this neat looking anime with a compelling storyline and great animation. It’s a breath of fresh air as it’s quite different from the common plot in anime nowadays. Finally, an anime that isn’t Isekai/about reincarnation. The story is about a hero who realized he was underappreciated by the community and decided to join the demon army instead. This anime gives “Die a hero or live long enough to become the villain” feels.
Our modern day is the series’ past as demons invaded Tokyo and humans later created Bioweapons to annihilate them. Leo is fifth of the Demonheart experiment and the world’s strongest hero with the special skill “Growth”. He defeated Demon Queen Echidna and her Elite Four. Because of how powerful he is, humans feared him and ostracized him to the point of exile. As a result, he decided to help Echidna rebuild her army and side with the demons. Interesting plot, right?
Echidna didn’t want anything to do with the man who destroyed her army and defeated her but the Elite Four believed him to be sincere and went against Echidna’s back. They had Leo help them out, but he had to disguise himself to avoid being caught by Echidna. He then created the alias Black Knight Onyx and became friends with Echidna who was still unaware that he’s Leo.
Leo later learns that Echidna wanted to get her hands on the Philosopher’s Stone to make the demon world flourish once again. The Demon World became a ragged wasteland in the past which led the demons to invade Earth in search of food and better living. Upon learning Echidna’s true intentions (which seemed quite hero-like for a demon), Leo vows to himself that he’ll help Echidna save the Demon World.
Leo’s story unravels much more once you get introduced to Eibrad in episode 8 and beyond that. They’re both brilliant characters with lots of life lessons. I’m not gonna leave many spoilers for y’all because I think it was a good watch. The show was quirky, the humor was great, the animation was great, and so were the characters. It was fun to watch Leo give communication advice to Mernes, one of the Elite Four, that turned out to be more like customer service advice. I guess we all could learn a thing or two from that episode and so much more once you get invested in the series. I’d give this a 7/10 stars. It’s a pretty good anime overall. There’s currently no confirmed release date of a season 2 but no doubt, I’ll watch it if it comes out.
