Baki Hanma Finally Fights Yujiro Hanma

Baki fans have long waited for the moment Baki gets a chance to fight his father, Yujiro. For long time fans this fight would likely be the turning point or ending point of the series, depending on how the story is going to take us.

Baki’s long running adventure of fighters just duking it out whether it’s in an arena or a parking lot or even inside the police station. The characters and allies Baki made along the way made for a good plot point just watching who is going to be facing who next and who is the stronger of these warriors. The ultimate match up however is going to be Baki against Yujiro Hanma, his dad with a long history of being the strongest creature in the entire world.

Baki

Episode 22 of the second season of Baki brings us to the match everyone has been waiting for. We all wonder if they are just teasing us with a possible brawl or if they’re really going to go all out but the following five episodes after that shows us this is the main event.

Yujiro invites Baki to and evening of fine dining and as this father son dining event comes to a close, Baki taunts Yujiro into answering a question that would trigger the main event, “why did you kill my mother” Baki asks Yujiro. Without even thinking about the answer, we knew where this was going to lead to. an exhibition of strength.

After a couple of taunts physically and verbally, Yujiro decides to grab Baki’s face and slam him out the window of a high rise building straight to a car, parked right outside the building. From here, Baki and Yujiro go 1 on 1 eventually going all out. Baki fights with everything he’s got, even showing off the new moves he’s mastered from fighting Pickle. Yujiro shrugs these off and mentions the greatest fighting style is the style of Yujiro Hanma, the strongest creature to ever live.

The fight goes on for 5 more episodes with a back-and-forth duel of strength and technique. Of course, with the occasional “throw one punch and switch to a dialogue, throw two kicks and get all sentimental”, perfectly brought up by Kozue as we were all thinking the same thing. As thousands of people were witnessing the spectacle, Yujiro and Baki sees a ghost of Yuuichiro Hanma, Baki’s grandfather and Yujiro’s dad.

A backstory takes place explaining who Yuuichiro was and how he was the first to defeat America. What happened to him next was not explained but this brought Yujiro to remember a technique which his dad saw as his favorite. Turning Baki into a human nunchuck and spinning him over and over a vehicle. As crazy as this looks, this is Baki we’re talking about so of course he’s going to come out not only alive but with an over-the-top comeback. He comes out unscathed and even puts together a little doll assembled from the parts of the vehicle he was able to make while being spun around like a nunchuck.

From here we get to see, both men just duking it out until Baki finally falls to the ground. Even then, his fighting spirit still decides to throw some hits on Yujiro. Yujiro at this point finally being proud of Baki, tells him it’s over and creates a make-believe tofu soup and enjoys it with Baki. The two sitting on the floor and Baki telling Yujiro the soup needs more salt. A quick exchange of being make-believe food critics and Baki flips the imaginary table. Yujiro finally claims Baki is the strongest in the world. His reason being that it takes true strength to have the strongest man in the world stand in the kitchen. Baki of course saying he lost, and that this match belonged to Yujiro, the two share a warrior’s handshake and the crowd goes wild.

This marks the end of Baki vs Yujiro, for now. There’s still so much the show could go for. We don’t know what happened to Baki’s grandfather, Retsu becoming a boxer and beating the champion, there’s even the part where a flashback showed the Ogre’s back engraved in the walls of Egypt. Are the Hanma’s descendants of Gods? Demons? Aliens? We’ll just have to wait for another season and see where the adventure takes us.
